It grows primarily in soils that are rocky to loamy but generally rich. It can be found on wooded slopes, along the banks of streams, on moist ledges, in swampy woods, along forest edges, as well as along roadsides and ditches.

Also known as common blue wood aster. It has bluish daisy-like flowers which bloom August - October.
