Bird Friendly Design

Close-up of a sparrow perched on a wooden surface.

Intent

To reduce the incidents of bird collisions with the built environment. Resulting in fewer bird deaths, and creating an environment where birds can thrive.

Requirements

Exterior glazing on 90% of windows within the first 16 m of above grade height, AND ventilation grates have a porosity of less than 20mm X 20mm (or 10mm x 50mm).

Newly planted young trees with protective covers in a grassy area beside a sidewalk, with mature trees and a street in the background.

Tree Soil Volume

Intent

To provide soil quantity and quality that enables new trees to thrive. More higher quality soil can help ensure the success of vegetation.

Requirements

Each separate new or retained tree planting area must have access to a minimum volume of 30m³ of soil, AND 100cm of uncompacted soil depth.

Tree Conservation

Large mature tree with thick trunk and extensive green foliage in a forest setting.

Intent

To support the conservation of healthy mature trees and the associated ecological, economic, climate and atheistical benefits.

Requirements

Preserve 25% of healthy, mature trees in situ.

Tree Maintenance Program

Person watering a young tree in a garden with a watering can, a wheelbarrow nearby, and other plants and trees in the background.

Intent

To ensure the health, safety, and longevity of trees.

Requirements

Trees are to be maintained, watered and warrantied for a minimum of 2 years.

Tree Shading

Residential house with a lawn, trees, flowers, and a paved driveway on a sunny day.

Intent

To control the urban heat island effect and solar heat gains through east, west and south facing windows.

Requirements

Provide exterior shading by planting at least one deciduous tree (50 to 70 millimeter DBH) per lot on the east, west, or south side of the building.

Native Plants

Field of yellow and purple wildflowers under a clear blue sky.

Intent

To encourage the use of native plants which are important as they support biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and provide food sources for pollinators.

Requirements

Provide a minimum of 50% native plant species (100% for Vegetated buffers), AND at least 2 native flowering species, AND no invasive species.
